The Ruth Thurston Institute on Biblical Studies appropriately bears the name of the late Ruth Thurston (former First Lady of New Covenant M. B. Church) in recognition of her role and contribution while serving as the first Director of Christian Education. The vision for the Institute began under the leadership of the late Rev. John L. Thurston and was carried out by Rev Stephen J. Thurston, who recognized the need to combat biblical ignorance among God's people.

It was realized that as Christians committing a few key verses to memory from the Bible and remembering one or two parables was not adequate direction. A proposal was developed and approved for what is now known as the Ruth Thurston Institute on Biblical Studies. From this, the Institute has taken on a serious, yet academic approach to a systematic in-depth study of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation.
